Vase of Roses

This will be next weeks class/demo. A lot looser than usual for a class and closer to how I would usually work. Fingers crossed!

A couple of intermediates.

Iris and Seagulls

I’m really enjoying these smaller size paintings/sketches. They come together quickly and I can get two done in a session. And they’re turning out pretty well.

First we have an iris with those oh so tricky shadows on the yellow petals. Second was something completely different – a lighthouse and a seagull. I have lost where this actually is but I’m sure someone will know.

Roses and New Paper

A delivery arrived today with some new (to me) paper. This is on Kilimanjaro paper (140lb CP) and I really quite liked it. I seem to remember I tried it years ago and didn’t like it but I’ve obviously got more tolerant in the mean time. I will probably buy again.

The subject was roses today and although the result is just a sketch I’ve finally got back into the swing of things.

Poppies

This was HELL! I had the idea to try painting flowers on hot press paper. It wasn’t a good idea. I thought the hot press would keep the colors bright as the paint doesn’t sink in so much. However the paint also dries immediately it hits the paper so blending and losing edges was nigh on impossible. I soldiered on even though the thing was looking wretched and bit by bit it came back together.

Looks nice but NEVER AGAIN!!

Sunflower Workshop

Phew! Another video lesson this afternoon and it was pretty intense. Flowers are tough at the best of times and require a huge amount of concentration. I’m exhausted! Everyone did really well – congrats to Cathy, Meredith, and MaryJo!!

Mine came out tighter than I would usually do but for me that is always the case when talking through a painting. I may touch this up and finish it off later.
